Political philosopher. In Leviathan, he argued that man's enlightened self-interest led him to surrender certain rights to forge a social contract for the greater good. A monarchist, Hobbes nevertheless maintained that men retained some natural rights, that equality should be respected among men, and that legitimate political power must in some sense be representative of the people.
